What kind of wildlife will I see

There is an abundance of Wildlife that you will see on your trip from high flying Eagles to Bears rolling rocks on the beach looking for a treat. The ocean is the dinner for not just for the fisherman but all the local inhabitants. Watch an Otter and her family play amongst the Kelp beds or the onslaught of White Sided Dolphins as they pass by. The majestic view out your boat is stunning and even the locals never get tired of the scenic grandeur of mountain and ocean view. Every corner you take you will see the splendour that the BC Coast is known for. The famed Killer whale (Orca) known for the true hunter of the see is brought front and centre when they pass the sleek movement of such a large animal is truly a sigh to see.

Make sure you have your phone or camera with you at all times as things happen fast, and you want to catch that shot of them breaching the water. Eagles abound and you should get your fill by end of day if so, lucky you will see their abilities in full view as they swoop down to catch an aren’t Rock Cod in the water that someone released and it never made it back to bottom (there are release mechanism but sometimes they do not work). Much bigger whale’s travel through the inside straight such as Humpback Whales and Grey Whales. Here is some other species in our waters on the Campbell River (inside passage) side as well as the Nootka Sound (west coast) side and what to bring. In these cases choosing the right fishing lodge in BC does not really apply since all of the coast is blessed with this wildlife some not always in view but around every point that can change.

  • Equipment
If you are really into getting the ultimate shot bring a camera with a telephoto lens although mobile phone cameras are getting better every day, they have limited zoom capability. Nothing will compare to a good, dedicated camera. Whales are endangered and all vessels are required to stand off.

  • Orca (known also as the Killer Whale)
There is not another predator in the water that is quit the match for an Orca I am sure you have probably seen the images of what a Killer Whale can do to a Great White Shark but having said that over the years Orcas have come right up to a vessel and you would swear there as playful as any other animal.

  • Bear
Several types of bears are in the area for the most part the Black Bear inhabits the Vancouver Island and the famed Grizzly (and Black Bear) are found more on the mainland although there has been siting of Grizzly on the north part of the island. A word of warning never get close to these animals they are extremely powerful you may run into one around some of the more wilderness lodges best to be made aware of how to deal with this situation should it ever happen to you many wildlife sites will give you precautionary procedures in case of contact.

  • Seals Sea Lion
As these spice got the Sea Lion for the most time seems to spend a lot of time on shore but the Seals are always close to water and usually playing the pups are adorable there are times though when Orca are close by that they will try and get out of the water there has been many stories of them trying so hard to get away from a whale that they have tried to get up on a boats swim grid.

  • Eagles
What can be said majestic, agile, ruler of the sky. It is no wonder nations have used the Eagle in their history. To see the power of their talons and the ability to lift such weight into the air with hardly any effort is really something to watch.

    Dolphin Porpoises
White sided Dolphin is mentioned, and you will see scores of them when they are around many will play with the wake of your boat.

  • Otter
To see the family’s interact and play is just simply fun. In the winter we used to watch them on our dock when it was snowing running and sliding on their bellies one after the other just like children do.

  • Others
Of course the are more like Seagulls and the like that truly make up the background sound of the coast we take it for granted but you will notice this sound right away if you have not heard it before.

In closing keep your head on a swivel a big part of the outing is seeing this abundance of life all around and you will soon realize what we could lose if we do not watch how we deal with our footprint in our own lives. We deal with many guests from all walks of life and business we believe that if we work together that this treasure will be here for generations to come.
